The quickest way to speed up your website!

If you have found your site loading slowly as you have made changes to it over the years, you may have missed the new image formats that are available for web browsers. No longer do you have just JPG or PNG.

Do you notice anything different among the 4 images in the screenshot here? They all look very similar, but the size difference, and therefore the download speed is very different! The PNG file is a whopping 184kb, the JPG is 75% smaller at 46kb, the WEBP file is almost 50% smaller still at 26kb, and the AVIF file is the smallest of all at 18kb!

The WEBP format has been supported for a number of years by all major browsers and can produce much smaller file sizes that look just as good, and just in the last year or so the AVIF format has received support from major browsers and can produce even smaller files sizes!

If you have a DIY website or an older website, even made by a professional from a few years ago, it's worth checking what image formats your site is using by right clicking on some of the images and opening them to see what they are. Your hosting provider or blog platform may or may not be converting the images you upload using the new formats that have smaller loading times.

Especially if you have some very large images, like hero images or full-screen background images on your site this can be a significant savings in loading times and by having a faster website it can even help your ranking in google.
